Micro-benchmark level performance comparison of high-speed cluster interconnects

چکیده
In this paper, we present a comprehensive performance evaluation of three high speed cluster interconnects: InfiniBand, Myrinet and Quadrics. We propose a set of microbenchmarks to characterize different performance aspects of these interconnects. Our micro-benchmark suite includes not only traditional tests and performance parameters, but also those specifically tailored to the interconnects’ advanced features such as user-level access for performing communication and remote direct memory access. In order to explore the full communication capability of the interconnects, we have implemented the micro-benchmark suite at the low level messaging layer provided by each interconnect. Our performance results show that all three interconnects achieve low latency, high bandwidth and low host overhead. However, they show quite different performance behaviors when handling completion notification, unbalanced communication patterns and different communication buffer reuse patterns.

High-speed Cluster Interconnects Myrinet, Quadrics, and Infiniband Achieve Low Latency and High Bandwidth with Low Host Overhead. However, They Show Quite Different Performance Behaviors When Handling Communication Buffer Reuse
Today’s distributed and high-performance applications require high computational power and high communication performance. Recently, the computational power of commodity PCs has doubled about every 18 months. At the same time, network interconnects that provide very low latency and very high bandwidth are also emerging. This is a promising trend in building highperformance computing environment...

RDMA has pleasant consideration in the late 1990 when the Virtual Interface Architecture was introduced. This growth has accelerated with the introduction of Open Fabrics Alliance’s (OFA’s) Verb Interface. The stability & independence of OFA verb interface facilitated significant growth of software applications that exploit the benefits of RDMA. RoCE is an emerging trend that can be made to wor...

متن کاملTechniques for Benchmarking of CPU Micro-Architecture for Performance Evaluation
CPU Micro-architecture has a significant impact on performance and hence is of special importance to the HighPerformance Computing industry. In this paper, we describe the development of a suite of benchmark programs which enables us to evaluate and compare processors based on the performance of the micro-architecture itself, independent of workload characteristics. The benchmark suite is compr...
متن کاملHigh-Speed Query Processing over High-Speed Networks
Modern database clusters entail two levels of networks: connecting CPUs and NUMA regions inside a single server in the small and multiple servers in the large. The huge performance gap between these two types of networks used to slow down distributed query processing to such an extent that a cluster of machines actually performed worse than a single many-core server. The increased main-memory c...
